Adele Vye is a mother and artist working across performance, sound and lens based media alongside a multi disciplinary practice. Inspired by her lived experience of chronic illness and her immediate environment living on the south wales coal field she explores reality and dream against the backdrop of environmental catastrophe within the domestic, industrial and natural environment. Subverting the use of everyday appliances and documenting natural phenomena, she attempts to open up portals within seemingly redundant spaces, taking the monotonous to the hypnotic and back again, she is fascinated by myth making, speculative and science fiction, science and the emotional and mechanical properties of objects and machines. Her work draws on layers of shared and personal context to explore physical and inner worlds.
In her new work for ‘Betwixt’, Vye presents collected visual and sonic moments taken from life including home, hospital and nature. She explores encounters with scrap collectors, sink holes, trampolines, mri and time machines, filmed and recorded on mobile phone and brought together to portray a non linear experience of time, through human connection, concern, longing and dream. The work aims to speculate on past, present and future against the backdrop of environmental and personal crisis and is framed through 4 variables of childbirth: Power, Passage, Passenger and Psyche which are commonly used in obstetrics to dictate ‘progress’ of mother and child during labour.
